I read this blog post a week ago- http://neoindian.org/2011/04/07/as-an-indian-woman-how-do-you-feel-when-you-drink-water/ -and I can not get it out of my mind.
I think that article was supposed to be satirical and humorous. But it got me seriously thinking - what does it mean to be an 'Indian woman'?
I haven't found the answer yet. It reminds me so much of that psycho-analysis question someone used to interest the audience at a seminar a long time ago. It began with -
Who are You?
I am Rohini. But that is only the name given by your family.
I am human. But that just classifies you as homo sapien. Who are 'YOU'?
I am a woman. But that is only your gender.
I am an Indian. But that is your nationality.
And so on and so forth it goes. This question about an 'Indian woman' makes me feel the same way.
Does it make me more Indian to wear a saree? Does it make me any less if I wear jeans?
How does a big bindi pertain to me being Indian? It only tells that I am a Hindu.
And I detest big bindi's anyway. I think they only look good on the silver screen, and not everyone can swing it in real life, unlike Usha Uthup.
Does not sporting a big bindi make me any less of a Hindu? How about a teeny weeny one, which is what I usually like?
And lets not even talk about the mangalsutra.
All Indian women are not Hindus, you know. So that argument is biased and baseless anyways.
So what does it really mean to be an Indian woman? How does it delineate me from the American, British or European women?
I haven't found the answer it. I think it probably is a mix of everything - of the Indian culture, of the religious spirit, of the ethics and morals that define our society. And more importantly of the constant need to balance being modern and seeking solace in tradition. And I think that definitely reflects in our blogs.
What do you say?

Our blogs certainly say and show.u rightly said it..
Actually i feel that the differentiation based on nationality is only up the culture in which we are born and brought up in and with. Otherwise it's a person's individual choice what he learns, because no two persons are identical..:)

well, I have read same article some time ago, and was smiling to myself that how much of confusion is there.
on the one end, she ( general woman, no one in person) talk about being comfy in pair of jeans.
but on the end, she thinks it may sacrifice her "Indian Womanhood"
though you have put forth good points indeed.
@pramoda - totally agree with you!
@makk - yeah. its a balancing act all the while. thanks!
As for Myself...I am a Woman...who have all sort of feelings and thoughts and wishes like any other woman in this world can have...I am no less or no more that any of them...
By birth I am an Indian...
By breath I am a Living Being...
By heart I am a Loving Soul...
By hope I am an Optimist...
I change myself according to what the situation demands...So, I would say...Bother for things that would really mean important for your existence...Indian or American...You are a Human Being and that too a Female, fortunately possessing the greatest Gift of God...The Ability to give Birth...to be a Mother...
@J - we are all sailing in the same river :) only the way people experience things are different.
